Katharine Hepburn on surviving the “Long Island Express” hurricane: “My God. It was something devastating—and unreal—like the beginning of the world—or the end of it—and I slogged and sloshed, crawled through ditches and hung on to keep going somehow—got drenched and bruised and scratched—completely bedraggled—finally got to where there was a working phone and called Dad.”

On September 21st, 1938, it came without warning. As the story goes, Katharine Hepburn was out playing golf in Fenwick as the monster storm was approaching. Hepburn and many other rode out the storm in Fenwick.
She stated in her 1991 book that 95% of her personal belongings were either lost or destroyed, including her 1932 Oscar which was later found intact.

A wave from a hurricane strikes a seawall in New England.
Over a four-day period, the 1938 storm nicknamed “The Long Island Express” dropped an average of 11 inches of rain over a 10,000-square-mile area. Flooding inflicted major damage through Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont, causing more than $300 million in losses. In all, 600 people died. Ten of those deaths were in New York City.
